Hands on Workshop on Flow Cytometry Data Analysis, 22nd -23rd June, International Centre for Stem Cells, Cancer and Biotechnology (ICSCCB), Pune, India

The ICSCCB, Pune and Flowcytometry Solutions (FlowSols) are jointly organizing a 2-day hands on flow cytometry data analysis workshop on 22nd and 23rd of June 2013.

Fluorescent Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) or Flow Cytometry is widely used in basic and clinical research. To harness the real power of this state of art technique, accurate data analysis of FACS data plays a major role. Correct data analysis is not only important but also critical to adequately identify and functionally characterize the multiple populations of interest within the immune system.

In the last few years, the number of parameters (colors) simultaneously used in flow cytometry experiments has increased. This is enabled by the availability of high-end instruments and powerful data analysis tools.

In this workshop, we will cover analysis of single or multicolor flow cytometry data and guidelines for the correct data analysis. Participants will be able to open their FCS files with the data analysis software, explore their data using various display options, perform gating, and quickly generate graphical and statistical reports to identify various population of interest.

Participants will also be provided with the knowledge to understand potential technical issues with the data. Handouts will be provided that includes lectures, published articles and Purdue cytometry list discussions.

The aim of the course is to introduce state-of-the-art and cutting-edge technologies in the field of analytical and preparative cytometry and to introduce into multiplexed cytometric “cytome” assessment, including cell mass spectrometry. Furthermore, we will provide an introduction into intravital sample preparation and microscopy technique.

Internationally renowned experts will give lectures and teach in hands-on practical sessions.The course aims at young scientists working in molecular biology and systems biology, providing them with technologies for the analysis and preparation of single cells and defined cell populations, expertise complementing and enhancing their molecular expertise. It will be a major focus of the course to teach handling of cells and evaluation of data, to sensitize applicants for an accurate analysis of cytometric and intravital imaging data and make them aware of possible pitfalls.

Invited experts from all over the word will give state of the art lectures and held 1-2 day practical demonstrations with hand-on experiments. Most of the teachers and their assistants will be present throughout the course to foster close contacts and discussions. In addition round table discussion will be organised in the evening, in order to present and discuss raw data from all participants. These discussions will be performed with the experts to provide tips and tricks and give real direct help in troubleshooting.

The EMBO Practical Course for Advanced Cytometry and Cell Sorting is suitable for PostDocs and experienced PhDs working in areas of basic or applied life science.

July 16-18, 2013, Life Technologies will be presenting a 3-Day, Hands-on Flow Cytometry Apoptosis Workshop in the Frederick, MD Training Facility. This research methods course will focus on using the flow cytometry platform to learn about apoptosis as measured with both common and cutting-edge assays.

This course is aimed at individuals with beginner to intermediate experience, and consists of a series of seminars and hands-on laboratory sessions. The seminar portion of the workshop will include a brief introduction to the basics of flow cytometry and in-depth discussions of methodologies for studying apoptosis. Laboratory sessions will include sample preparation, flow cytometer instrument operation, data collection, data analysis, and troubleshooting tips.

A basic fluorescent imaging system will also be available to visualize cells. Early to late stage apoptotic events will be studied through both seminar and lab based exercises including examination of cellular viability and vitality, changes in mitochondrial membrane potential, changes in plasma membrane asymmetry and permeability, activation of capase enzymes, and chromatin condensation. Each day will begin with a seminar followed by lab exercises, and will end with a session on data analysis.

Each participant will receive lecture notes and laboratory handout materials. The workshop is limited to 12 participants and is designed to maximize the time for interaction with our instructors. When completed, the participant will have an enhanced understanding of analyzing this important cellular phenomenon using flow cytometry.

Instructors for this workshop will be Jolene Bradford, R&D Associate Director for Flow Cytometry Systems and Flow Cytometry Applications Specialists - Dolores Ciufo, Suzanne Schloemann and Liz De Lima.

The cost for the workshop will be $750/person and lunch will be provided each day. Discounted lodging information is available. Participants are invited to join the instructors for a workshop dinner on July 17th at a local restaurant.
