Dates: June 8-14, 2013

Description:A research methods course in flow cytometry will be offered with emphasis on applications in cell biology, immunology, cell labeling, fluorescent protein analysis, bead- based assays, screening and sorting. The faculty consists of over 20 distinguished members of the flow cytometry community. This course will be aimed toward individuals with some experience in flow cytometry, and will consist of 19 lectures and a series of hands-on laboratory sessions.

Each participant will receive extensive lecture notes and laboratory handout materials. Laboratory sessions will address sample preparation, instrument construction and operation, data collection and analysis, common and more cutting edge flow assays, and typical problems encountered in flow cytometry. Lab sessions will be hands-on, with plenty of time and opportunity for interaction with the instructors.

Lab sessions will utilize a large variety of commercial and developmental instruments. Each participant will attend six different 4-hour laboratory sessions, chosen from 16 different offerings. During one evening session representatives from several commercial vendors will be available to demonstrate and discuss their most recent instruments and techniques. A second evening session will feature short presentations on next-generation flow cytometers and applications.

Our Keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Diether Recktenwald, who will provide a historical perspective on the future of flow cytometry instrumentation. One afternoon and evening will be free for participants to enjoy the many regional attractions of northern New Mexico, and the last evening includes a banquet with live entertainment at the world-famous El Pinto Restaurant (www.elpinto.com).

Registration fees include all lectures, 6 laboratory sessions, course materials, breakfast & lunch each day, coffee breaks with snacks, refreshments at two evening sessions and the banquet. Inexpensive housing will be available in newly renovated on-campus dormitories. Registration will be limited to 80 participants and will be available online beginning in February, 2013.

Flow Cytometry Data Analysis using R - Click to view/hide

General Topic: Flow

Description:
Flow Cytometry Data Analysis using R, Workshop offered by the Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops, Toronto, Ontario Canada, June 17-18, 2013

With the underlying technology rapidly increasing in complexity, Flow Cytometry (FCM) data analysis is becoming more crucial for biological experiments. This workshop aims to provide participants some familiarity with the open source software environment R as an analysis tool for FCM data as they explore the fundamental concepts of taking their data to diagnosis and discovery.

Participants will be able to open their FCS files within R, explore their data using various visualizations, perform simple automated pre-processing tasks, quickly generate quality assurance reports to identify potential technical issues with the data, and automate simple gating strategies. As well, some basic clustering techniques will be explained and demonstrated, and new advanced analysis options presented (e.g., flowType, flowDensity, flowMeans, RchyOptimyx, flowClust3.0, SPADE, flowFP/flowBin, SamSPECTRAL).

Workshop participants will come away with a better understanding of bioinformatics approaches to FCM analysis, be able to write their own analysis scripts in R to explore their FCM data, as well automate a gating strategy and record statistics of interest (e.g., proportions of cells in speci fic populations of interest.
