An imaging flow cytometer for your cell phone
Researchers at the BioPhotonics Laboratory at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have demonstrated the imaging of a suspension of cells labeled with a fluorescent DNA stain passing through the field of view of a cell phone camera. They used off-line image processing to estimate cell counts. While sensitivity, dynamic range, and other metrics that are required to rigorously evaluate its performance as a cytometer were not reported, the demonstration offers the tantalizing suggestion that such a device might one day be used to rapidly image bodily fluids for cell counts or cell analysis.
