NEW TECHNOLOGY

Fluorescent Nickel sensor. A group from University of California, Berkeley, headed by Christopher J. Chang has developed a turn-on fluorescent senor for detecting nickel in living cells. The sensor was constructed starting with BODIPY, or boron dipyrromethene fluorescent dye combined with a nickel cation receptor, creating the sensor NS1. Absorption is at 495 nm and emission at 507 nm. See BioPhotonics, page 12-13, March 2010.

Flow-validated antibodies for multiparametric signaling cytometry. Beckman Coulter has announced a Cell Lab Signaling Cytometry (Cell Lab SC) line of reagents that offers a comprehensive set of antibodies for the detection of the phosphorylation state of signaling proteins in cells via flow cytometry. iCyt announces two new flow cytometry instruments. iCyt a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America has announced the introduction of SYNERGY - an advanced bench-top cell sorter/analyzer, and ECLIPSE - a multi-color automated bench-top analyzer. Both new instruments have been optimized for use with iCyt's new comprehensive line of flow cytometry reagents. See: www.i-cyt.com\

A flow cytometer for detecting somatic cells in milk. Advanced Instruments' new Delta Instruments SomaScope(TM) Smart has received approval for sale in the U.S. from the Lab Committee of the National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments (NCIMS) as the industry's first somatic cell counter to feature a Light Emitting Diode (LED)as its light source. The new SomaScope Smart uses an LED instead of an HBO lamp to illuminate the stained cells in a sample and detect them with dual photomultiplier tubes. The SomaScope Smart somatic cell counter is for use by dairy processors, payment laboratories, veterinary laboratories, and dairy herd improvement (DHI) laboratories, providing analysis for somatic cells in cow, sheep, goat, buffalo, and camel milk.

The SomaScope Smart is available from: http://www.aicompanies.com/index.cfm/
