Hydrogen replacement improves fluorescent dyes' detection, stability, and shelf life, Biophotonics, pg 16, October 2010. By replacing one specific hydrogen atom with deuterium, which is twice as heavy, a group led by Niren Murthy, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University has increased the stability and shelf life of fluorescent dyes and also improved their ability to detect smaller concentrations of reactive oxygen species. Their findings appear to be applicable to several classes of fluorescent molecules.
