The 3rd ASEAN flow cytometry workshop was hosted by Dr. Kovit Pattanapanyasat of the Faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and held at the Sriraj Hospital Medical Center at Mahidol University from April 1-5, 2013.
April 1, 2013 Symposium: 102 students from Thailand and neighboring countries (Indonesia, Macou, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam and Oman) attended lectures on applications of laser flow cytometry in biomedical research. Vendor booths were set up to demonstrate the latest reagents and instruments for flow cytometry. Eleven faculty members from abroad and three local faculty were supplemented by a number of technical experts from the vendors and staff associates from the host institution.
Drs. Cram and Krishnamurthy gave a presentation on basics of flow cytometry with demonstration of "Build your own Cytometer" by Dr. Bill Telford. Lectures on multicolor flow cytometry, phenotype analysis in hematopoietic tumors, monitoring of leukemia and minimal residual disease were presented by Drs. Mike Kapinsky, Brent Wood and Michael Borowitz. Dr. Vivek Tanavde discussed mesenchymal stem cell analysis. Dr. Kovit Pattanpanyasat talked about flow cytometric monitoring of micro-particles in disease. Dr. Scott Cram gave a talk on chromosome sorting. Quality Control in flow cytometry was discussed by Dr. Paresh Jain.
Wet Lab Modules, April 2-5, 2013: Nine wet lab modules of four hours each were presented on a variety of flow instruments and cell sorters available in the center. Additional instruments were provided by Beckman Coulter. Most of the modules were repeated three times to accommodate all the attendees.
Students in groups of 5-8 were taught flow applications in Cell cycle and Proliferation (Krishan, Agrawal, and Krishnamurthy), Apoptosis (Telford), Phenotype analysis (Jain and Leong), Stem cells (Telford and Tanavde), Multicolor flow cytometry (Kapinsky), Leukemia and Minimal residual disease monitoring (Wood and Borowitz), HIV monitoring (Onlamoon) and Electrostatic cell sorting (Osborne).
Dinner receptions for the faculty and students were hosted by BioLegend and Beckman Coulter.
Drs. Krishnamurthy and Cram conducted a quiz based on 40 multiple choice questions based on modules taught in the workshop. They reviewed the answers from the students and discussed the correct answer.
Students were given an evaluation sheet to record their scores for the various wet labs presented. They were asked to provide their feedback and suggestions for improvement. The feedback was very positive.
The graduation ceremony was held on April 5 with completion certificates presented to the students by the faculty.
Funds were provided by the faculty to sponsor 10 new members for ISAC.
The workshop was supported by the Live Education Task Force of the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC), Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson, BioLegend, Miltenyi-Biotec, Emerald Biosciences, TreeStar, and Merck Millipore.
Clinical Flow Cytometry Symposium, Hong Kong, 7th April, 2013: A symposium on applications of flow cytometry in diagnostics and monitoring of patients was attended by 84 registered guests and hosted by Beckman Coulter, Drs. Borowitz, Kapinsky, Krishan and Wood gave lectures and conducted a panel discussion on monitoring of minimal residual disease.
