Biosafety Guidelines and Links to Information on the Internet

General Biosafety regulations and guidelines for risk assessment are available from a variety of government sources. Below is a list of those that are pertinent to biomedical research:

Biosafety in Microbiological and Biological Laboratories, 5th Ed. USA, NIH/CDC

OSHA Bloodborne pathogens USA, “Universal Precautions” for handling samples containing potentially infectious material

Risk Group and Biosafety Level Definitions: American Biological Safety Association Risk Group Database and Risk Classification Criteria for WHO, Australia, Canada, European Union, USA CDC and NIH for RDNA.

Pathogen Safety Database: Public Health Agency of Canada Listing of Pathogens with risk assessment criteria.

Biological Risk Assessment Generic Form: Generic template for performing a biological risk assessment from the CDC.

World Health Organization. Laboratory Biosafety Manual: third edition of WHO biosafety manual in several languages.

The ISAC Biosafety Committee was established in 1997 with the goal of providing guidance to its membership and the scientific community on safety issues related to Cytometry, in particular cell sorting. The committee has been active in the creation of biosafety guidelines (1997) and standards (2007) for cell sorting. The up-dated Biosafety Guidelines prepared by ISAC Biosafety Committee members are available for download here (PDF format, 739kB).
