Team Leader, Flow Cytometry

The Flow Cytometry Team Leader functions to support the hematology/oncology, infectious disease and other clinical programs for Atrium Health, formerly The Carolinas Healthcare System, by performing and overseeing high complexity flow cytometry testing.

This position works closely with the technical and administrative leadership within the laboratory as well as physicians, surgeons and other clinical providers. This position is involved in all aspects of testing in the laboratory including immunophenotyping for the leukemia and lymphoma programs, lymphocyte subset analysis and additional flow cytometry based testing. Also, this position performs many additional supportive roles including regulatory/QA activities, procedure writing and review, education of students and communicating with other medical staff.

  • Oversee daily operations of the flow cytometry department
  • Ensure a functional and effective laboratory through routine equipment maintenance, quality control procedures, and monitor testing supply levels and laboratory conditions
  • Be primarily responsible for ensuring that equipment is functional and providing maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Drive testing enhancements with the help of the Director and Pathologists
  • Write and edit laboratory standard operating procedures
  • Be able to effectively troubleshoot instrumentation, testing performance and other issues within the laboratory
  • Train and educate testing personnel in the laboratory as well as provide education to students, residents and other medical professionals
  • Perform high complexity flow cytometry testing including immunophenotyping for the leukemia and lymphoma programs, lymphocyte subset analysis and additional flow cytometry based testing
  • Independently analyze and report patient results within the electronic medical record as well as directly to clinicians
  • Organize and coordinate sample processing and testing workflow within the laboratory
  • Effectively interact with other members of the laboratory and clinical programs while communicating complex medical information
  • Independently drive quality assurance and performance improvement activities
  • Remain up to date with the current state of the art within the fields of laboratory medicine, especially histocompatibility, immunogenetics and flow cytometry, and participate in continuing education activities both internal and external
  • Use knowledge of the laboratory and testing methodologies to evaluate and validate new equipment and technologies

Education, Experience and Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science required. Three years of additional laboratory experience in a CAP accredited flow cytometry laboratory required. ASCP or equivalent certification is preferred.
