Uttara Chakraborty

Senior Research Scientist, Facility In-charge

Education Flow Cell Core Manager in Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR)- 2014 Post doctoral fellow (DBT Research Associate) Molecular Mycology Lab, JNCASR, Bengaluru – 2012 PhD, Plant Molecular and Cellular Genetics, Bose Institute, Kolkata – 2008 MSc (Botany) BSc (Life Sciences, Botany and Zoology)

Scientific Interest and Avenues for Collaboration My position requires knowledge of multi-color flow cytometry theories and cell sorting, teaching and training in flow cytometry and light microscopy, scientific data analysis, project planning skills, personnel management as well as hands on experience on the different analyzers, sorters, and confocal microscopy systems. Among all these attributes, teaching and training primarily has been my thrust area in India. It has been one of my major challenges to introduce the concept of shared resource laboratories among the mainstream researchers and uplift core facilities into laboratories for research and innovation. I would like to promulgate the SRL goals and concepts in our country that would further initiate other outreach programmes of ISAC. Stewarding and promoting the “MYO” (Make your Own) cytometry concept, as an education tool in basic understanding of flow cytometry among the budding flow cytometrists in India has been a major step in this direction, under the constant supervision and support from Dr. William Telford, who has popularized this through the Indo-US Cytometry Workshops every year. Another important thrust area has been to network with other core laboratories and form an open access platform similar to the Core Technologies for Life Sciences (CTLS), a non-profit association working to bring together European shared resource groups. My special interest lies in sorting rare cell populations such as the circulating tumor cells and in understanding the structure of neurons with confocal and super-resolution microscopy.

Participation/Support of ISAC Member of ISAC SRL Content Task Force since 2016 Organizing Secretary for the 17th Indo-US Cytometry Workshop in 2016 at Indian Institute of Science, jointly conducted by the Live Education Task Force of ISAC. Member of The Cytometry Society (TCS), India since 2015 First time attendee in CYTO 2018, Prague; Poster Title: Eight top SRL Challenges that facility managers in India face today
