Joel M. Sederstrom, MS is Director of the Cytometry and Cell Sorting Core and Co-Director of the High Parameter Cytometry Shared Resource at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He has more than 25 years of experience in flow cytometry, shared resource management, and technology implementation, supporting basic, translational, and clinical research programs. Joel earned his Master of Science in Immunology and Cancer Biology from the University of Minnesota, where he began his career working on dendritic cell-based cancer immunotherapy and advanced flow cytometric applications.

Recruited to Baylor College of Medicine in 2006 to establish the Cytometry and Cell Sorting Core, Joel has guided its growth into a large, multi-instrument shared resource supporting investigators across basic, translational, and clinical research programs. Under his leadership, the facility became the first Baylor College of Medicine core to receive the institution’s Core of the Year award twice, reflecting a sustained commitment to excellence in service, innovation, and scientific support. His interests include high-parameter fluorescent, mass, spectral, and imaging cytometry, shared resource operations, workforce development, and expanding access to advanced cytometry technologies.

Joel is the founder and long-time leader of FlowTex, an ISAC-associated regional cytometry organization that promotes education, collaboration, and professional development throughout Texas and the surrounding region. Through FlowTex, he has helped build a vibrant community of scientists, clinicians, and shared resource professionals while fostering accessible training and networking opportunities. He is also active in the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF), where he helped establish a regional network of core facility professionals in the Southwest and has served in leadership roles within the South Central Core Collaborative (SC3).

An active member of ISAC since 2006, Joel has served the Society in numerous leadership roles, including member of the Shared Resource Laboratories Committee, Chair of the Meetings Committee, CYTO Virtual 2021 Program Co-Chair, CYTO 2022 Program Chair, Councilor (2022–2026), and member of the ISAC Finance Committee. Elected Treasurer in 2026, he brings extensive experience in financial stewardship, strategic planning, organizational governance, and nonprofit leadership. Through ISAC, FlowTex, ABRF, and SC3, Joel remains committed to advancing cytometry through education, collaboration, and service to the global cytometry community.
