Michael Gregory

Michael Gregory is a recognized leader in flow cytometry shared resource laboratories (SRLs), with more than twenty years of experience in flow cytometry, cell sorting, and core facility operations. Throughout his career, he has focused on advancing best practices, strengthening shared resource laboratories, and supporting researchers through innovative flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies.

Michael has been an active volunteer and leader within the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC). He was selected as an ISAC Shared Resource Laboratory (SRL) Emerging Leader (2014–2018) and was a co-author of the landmark 2016 ISAC Flow Cytometry Shared Resource Laboratory Best Practices publication, which provided a framework for SRL operations. As Chair of the ISAC SRL Committee (2018–2024), Michael led the development of the ISAC SRL Recognition Program and established the ISAC SRL Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Repository. He also serves on the ISAC Governance Committee and ISAC Nominations and Awards Committee and is a member of the Southern California Flow Cytometry Association Program Committee.

Michael currently serves as Director of the Flow Cytometry Cell Sorting Facility at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he oversees facility operations, instrumentation, staff, and provides scientific consultation for a diverse research community. He partners with investigators to design experiments, optimize flow cytometry and cell sorting workflows, troubleshoot technical challenges, and support downstream applications. Prior to joining Caltech, Michael established and directed the Flow Cytometry Core and biosafety level 3 cell sorting facility at the Cleveland Clinic Florida Research and Innovation Center. Before that, he spent twelve years at the New York University Langone Medical Center Cytometry and Cell Sorting Laboratory, serving as Laboratory Manager and later as Technical Director. His experience spans infectious disease, immunology, therapeutic antibody development, cell sorting biosafety, and a broad range of analytical and cell sorting applications.

Michael earned both his Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Master of Science in Biology from New York University and is certified as a Specialist in Cytometry by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
