Scientific Interest and Avenues for Collaboration
I am interested in host-microbial mutualism at the interface of the intestinal immune system and the gut microbiota and in all kinds of novel technologies that aid in shedding light onto this complex relationship. At the moment I take advantage of the simplicity of defined model microbiotas that can be maintained in mice over many generations combined with a high-resolution flow cytometry approach to sort individual bacterial species from the gut microbiota. With this I would like to analyze microbiota physiology on the single species / single cell level, for example elucidating inter-bacterial metabolite fluxes by mass spectrometry of sorted cells.

A second avenue of my research centers around the dynamics of microbiota-specific CD4+ T cell responses and involves advancing both microbiological as well as flow cytometrical tools to better understand physiological T cell responses targeted at the intestinal microbiota.
