Karen Perelmuter is a Senior Technical Associate in the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource Laboratory at the Cell Biology Unit of the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (Microbiology orientation) and a Master’s degree in Biotechnology. Karen has more than 15 years of experience working as a research assistant at the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo, initially providing support in cell culture and experimental work, and in recent years focusing primarily on the flow cytometry SRL.
Scientific Interest and Avenues for Collaboration
Karen’s interests include flow cytometry quality control, SRL management, and user training in good flow cytometry practices. She is particularly open to collaborations focused on education, method optimization, and support for early-career researchers.
Participation / Support of ISAC
Karen attended CYTO for the first time in 2019 in Vancouver, where she presented a poster, and later presented again at CYTO 2024 in Edinburgh. She also co-organized two ISAC workshops in 2022 (virtual) and 2023 (in person) at her institution, both aimed at students and early-career researchers with limited experience in flow cytometry, with a special emphasis on Latin America.
Karen was inspired to apply to the Leadership Development Program as an opportunity to expand her role beyond technical responsibilities and develop leadership skills within the flow cytometry community. She is motivated by ISAC’s impact on standards, education, and global collaboration in cytometry, and is particularly interested in increasing ISAC’s visibility in Latin America, promoting recognition of scientific work in South America, and strengthening collaboration, education, and engagement across regions.
