Joseph T. Trotter: Advancing Cytometry Through Technology

Joseph T. Trotter is a pioneering leader in cytometry technology whose work has helped shape the development and practice of modern flow cytometry. Throughout his career, he combined deep technical expertise with a practical understanding of how cytometry could be made more reliable, reproducible, and useful to researchers.

Trotter was closely involved in the evaluation and development of flow cytometry instrumentation during a period of rapid technological change. At The Scripps Research Institute, he led efforts to test and evaluate emerging cytometry technologies, helping bridge the gap between new engineering concepts and the needs of scientists using cytometry in their research. He later continued this work at BD Biosciences, where he contributed to advances in flow cytometry instrumentation and applications.

His contributions extended beyond hardware. Trotter made important contributions to the ways cytometrists set up instruments, establish controls, evaluate data, and interpret measurements. He also developed WinMDI, a widely used flow cytometry data-analysis program that made cytometric data analysis accessible to researchers around the world. His work reflected a commitment to making cytometry not only more technologically capable, but also more practical and approachable for the people who used it.
